Update on anonymous HUB shooting threat

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Earlier today (Oct. 12) Penn State Police were alerted to an anonymous post at 10:29 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, on the social media platform Yik Yak threatening a possible shooting at the HUB at noon on Monday, Oct. 13. University Police continue to investigate the threat and remain on high alert. Police will have an increased presence at the HUB on Monday and University Park campus operations will continue as normally scheduled.

Police, who were told of the threat by students who had seen it online, are still attempting to verify the credibility of the threat on this location-based platform, which allows anonymous postings from those in the area of Penn State. University Police have alerted the regional FBI office to this shooting threat, as well as the State College Police, and are working with the owners of Yik Yak to trace the source of the original post.

Anonymous threats are taken seriously by University Police and every attempt to find the individual or individuals making the threat and to determine the credibility is being undertaken. Police are asking that anyone with information about this threat or its author call 814-863-1111.

Penn State officials will keep the campus and community up to date with any new developments via PSUAlert, Penn State Facebook and Twitter, and also post the most current information to the official Penn State News site at http://news.psu.edu.
