No. 4 field hockey travels to No. 2 Maryland

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Following back-to-back shutouts, the No. 4 Penn State field hockey team travels to No. 2 Maryland for a Big Ten matchup on Friday (Oct. 10) at 3:30 p.m. The game will be nationally televised by the Big Ten Network, the first of three BTN matches this season for the Nittany Lions. Penn State then returns home to host Bucknell on Tuesday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m.

With a Win at Maryland
Penn State would pick up its first victory over a team ranked No. 2 or higher since defeating No. 2 Wake Forest, 2-0, in the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament on Nov. 16, 2007. That season, the squad beat No. 2 Maryland in the quarterfinals on Nov. 11, 1-0, marking the last time the Nittany Lions beat the Terrapins.

Maryland Notes
- The Terrapins have compiled a 9-2 record this season, including a 3-1 mark in the Big Ten.
- Maryland has downed five ranked opponents this season. It's only losses came to then-No. 2 North Carolina (3-1, Sept. 5) and then-No. 15 Northwestern (3-2, Sept. 20).
- Offensively, Maryland ranks ninth in the country with a 1.91 scoring margin this season. Moira Putsch leads the squad with seven goals and 18 points this season. Katie Gerzabek leads the squad with 11 assists and is sixth nationally with 1.00 per game.
- Defensively, the Terrapins are eighth nationally with a 1.18 goals against average.
- Missy Heharg is in her 27th season at the helm.

Series History
Penn State holds a 20-11-1 lead in a series that dates back to 1975.

Last Time Out
Penn State is coming off a two-shutout weekend. First, senior Taylor Herold (Fredericksburg, Va.) notched two goals as No. 9 Penn State field hockey put together a dominating 5-0 win at Drexel on Oct. 3. Four different Nittany Lions scored in the contest. Then, the squad defeated No. 14 Temple, 2-0, on Oct. 5. Seniors Herold and Laura Gebhart (Mount Joy, Pa.) each found the back of the cage in the victory.

Penn State in the NCAA Rankings
Penn State ranks fifth nationally in scoring margin (2.13), fifth in penalty corners per game (8.25), sixth in goals against average (1.07), 10th in goals per game (3.25) and 10th in scoring average (3.20).

Herold Hits a Hundred
Herold posted a goal and two assists at Ohio State (Sept. 28), giving her 100 career points. She has 46 goals and 15 assists for her career. Her 46 goals are two shy of tying her for 10th on Penn State's all-time list. She is four goals away from tying head coach Charlene Morett-Curtiss for ninth with 50.

Herold's Heroics
Herold posted three goals, all in the second half, against No. 14 Princeton on Sept. 12. It marked her first career hat trick. Against Ohio State (Sept. 28), she had a career-high two assists. She is first on the team with 30 points and 12 goals and tied for first with six assists. Herold has four multi-goal games this season. The senior ranks fifth nationally in goals per game (1.00).

Gebhart on the Assist
Gebhart has started all 75 games since arriving on campus as a freshman. Currently, she has 44 assists, which is two away from tying her for seventh on Penn State's all-time list and three from tying her for sixth. She is tied for first on the team with six assists.

Solid in the Cage
Redshirt senior goalkeeper Kylie Licata (Mountain Top, Pa.) has been a force between the posts, making nine saves against Old Dominion and holding Virginia scoreless, the first time the Cavaliers were blanked since 2011. Then, at No. 3 Connecticut, she stopped a career-high 14 shots. Most recently, she made 10 saves against No. 18 Michigan. She ranks third nationally with a .835 save percentage.

Coming up with Corners
The Nittany Lions rank fifth nationally with 8.25 penalty corners per game. The squad has had 12 or more on three separate occasions, including a season-high 16 against Lock Haven. Penn State has only had less than seven corner attempts four times.
