Graduate student career exploration workshop set for Oct. 18

September 24, 2014

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State Graduate School is hosting a Career Exploration Workshop from 9 a.m to 12:45 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, in 101 Thomas Building for currently-enrolled graduate students. Formatted as panel discussions, the sessions are designed to help prepare students as they enter into the workforce by providing valuable tools necessary to navigate and thrive in today’s job market.

Two topics will be the centerpieces of discussion: “The Classroom of the Future” and “Developing Your Professional Self.” "The Classroom of the Future" panel is geared toward students exploring careers within higher education and will examine how the profession is evolving with the emergence of new technologies, increased global engagement and the changing demographics of future student populations.

"The Developing Your Professional Self" panel is designed to assist graduate students in identifying ways to expand their skill sets prior to completing their graduate degrees in order to become more competitive candidates in the applicant pool. This includes utilizing various social media tools, participating in extracurricular activities, community engagement, and taking part in courses, webinars and other professional development opportunities outside the realm of academia that employers find attractive.

Representatives from a variety of University offices and units will serve as panelists, including Penn State Career Services, Information Technology Services, the Office of Research Protections, Penn State World Campus, the Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence, and the Colleges of Communications and Engineering. Several Graduate School alumni will also be on hand to offer advice on these topics.

Registration for the workshop is available via the Graduate School website and is required for all participants.

Additional information and updates will be available on the Graduate School website and Facebook page.
