Kavehrad invited to share expertise at visible light communication conference

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Mohsen Kavehrad, W. L. Weiss Chair Professor of Electrical Engineering, will participate in the inaugural China Visible Light Communication (VLC) Industry Technology Innovation and Application Alliance Conference.

Sponsored by the People's Republic of China's Ministry of Science and Technology and Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the conference will be held Aug. 27-28 at Guangzhou Baiyun International Convention Center, Guangzhou, Guangdong, China.

Kavehrad will discuss the development and application of VLC in the United States.

A Penn State faculty member since 1997, Kavehrad is the founding director of the Center for Information and Communications Technology Research.

Prior to joining the University, he held positions at Fairchild Industries, GTE Corporation and Bell Laboratories; was a professor and director of photonic networks and systems thrust in the Communications and Information Technology Ontario at the University of Ottawa; and served as a chief technical officer and vice president of TeleBeam, Inc. in State College.

Kavehrad's areas of expertise include digital communications, computer networking, intelligent networks, multimedia communications, mobile computing, local area wireless networks, portable and mobile communications, optical fiber communications, optical networking, coding and information theory and satellite communications.

A fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, he received his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Amirkabir University of Technology, formerly the Tehran Polytechnic, Tehran, Iran; master's degree in electrical engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute; and doctorate degree in electrical engineering from Polytechnic Institute of New York University.
