Two named to director positions at Penn College

Two longtime employees have been appointed to director’s positions in the General Services department at Pennsylvania College of Technology.

Effective July 1, Charley A. Kern was named director of facilities engineering; Don J. Luke became director of facilities operations. Both report directly to Penn College President Davie Jane Gilmour.

“I’m pleased to have Charley and Don lead our talented and dedicated General Services staff,” Gilmour said. “They have both served the college well for many years, and I’m confident they will continue to do so in their new supervisory roles.”

General Services manages design, construction and renovation of all capital projects at the college. The department also handles essential operations, maintenance, repair and services for existing grounds, facilities and infrastructure.

As director of facilities engineering, Kern oversees the physical plant, including construction and maintenance of all college building spaces.

Kern began working at the college in 1989 as a plumbing, heating and refrigeration mechanic. Subsequent positions included heating and refrigeration control mechanic-lead person and supervisor of plumbing, heating and cooling systems.

Areas of the physical plant – including construction, custodial, grounds, motor pool and environmental – fall within Luke’s role as director of facilities operations. He is responsible for maintenance of all college grounds and buildings.

Luke started at the college as a second-shift custodian in 1990. He later became facilities assistant-lead person and facilities supervisor.
