Summer community events at New Kensington campus

BBQ and drive-in movie; book discussion

NEW KENSINGTON, Pa. -- In keeping with Chancellor Kevin Snider’s vision of bringing together the campus and community, Penn State New Kensington will host two evening events in July geared to the local community.

Kicking off the series is “Summer BBQ and Drive-in Movie” on Thursday, July 10, in the campus’ upper parking lot. The BBQ starts at 7 p.m., and the film, “The Lego Movie,” begins at 8:30 p.m. The movie is free to the public. The BBQ sandwiches are free to campus students and $5 for the general public. The family-oriented activity will relocate to the Forum Theatre if the weather does not cooperate. For more information, call 724-334-6063.

The second event, “One Book, One Community,” delves into the book, “The Johnstown Flood,” by Pulitzer Prize-winning author David McCullough. A group reading will take place at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 22, in the campus’ Blissell Library. A discussion will follow the reading. Copies of the book will be available to borrow in the library. Participants in the book session will be eligible to attend a special program on Sept. 20 by the Johnstown Area Heritage Association. For more information, call 724-334-6011.
