Third edition of Nursing Informatics and the Foundation of Knowledge released

The third edition of Nursing Informatics and the Foundation of Knowledge has been published by Jones and Bartlett Learning. The book’s focus, which was written and edited by Dee McGonigle and Kathleen Mastrian, is intended for all levels of nursing education -- from a bachelors’ degree through a DNP/PhD degree, as well as nurses’ thrust into informatics’ roles in clinical agencies.

Two chapters on “Data Mining as a Research Tool” and “The Art of Caring in Technology Laden Environments” were added to the text. Updates to the third edition include research briefs to encourage readers to access current informatics research. Also incorporated into the third edition is content on cutting edge innovations related to nursing aspects of meaningful use, patient safety, wearable technology, cloud computing, smart devices and social media.

Mastrian is an associate professor of nursing and program coordinator for the Shenango campus of Penn State. She is also senior managing editor of the Online Journal of Nursing Informatics (OJNI). She has been involved in the education of nontraditional aged students for more than 30 years in the RN to BS Nursing program. Mastrian is active in the development of technology enhanced courses for registered nurses facilitating asynchronous participation, and active and collaborative learning. She is one of the founding proposers to place the RN to BS program online for the Penn State’s World Campus, has developed four of the courses for that curriculum, and teaches at least one section per semester for the World Campus program.

McGonigle, is a professor of nursing at Chamberlain University. She is actively involved in developing online courses for the informatics program at Chamberlain. Prior to her retirement from Penn State, she conceptualized and was instrumental in the development and implementation of the Online RN to BS Nursing degree program delivered through Penn State’s World Campus.
