Community garden opens for the season

A handful of eager gardeners braved the blustery weather last weekend to get growing in their plots in the new Hershey Community Garden. The garden, located on the west side of the Penn State Hershey campus next to the fitness center and adjacent to the Life Lion hangar, opened on April 1 for the 2014 season.

The garden will provide employees and other community residents with a place to both grow crops and cultivate friendships. Plans include providing onsite educational and wellness opportunities, hands-on gardening demonstrations, and garden festivals. The garden is the first joint project of Hershey Impact, a group of representatives from the five Hershey entities. The goal of the group, founded in January 2011, is to further the legacy of Milton S. Hershey by partnering together to enrich our local community and raise its profile as a great place to live and work.

All 124 garden plots have been claimed for 2014. To learn more about the Hershey Community Garden or add your name to the list for a plot in a future season, visit http://www.hersheycommunitygarden.org.
