Blood drive competition with Ohio State kicks off April 7

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- This April, the Penn State Student Red Cross Club challenges the Penn State community to donate blood in the fourth annual Fight for Life, a friendly battle with Ohio State to collect the most blood donations throughout the month.

This is the fourth year of the Fight for Life. In the 2013 competition, Penn State prevailed by collecting 1,003 units of blood to Ohio State’s 848 units of blood. As every blood donation has the potential to help save up to three lives, Penn State collected enough to support more than 3,000 people in need of blood last year.

This spring, the Red Cross is focused on increasing blood inventory levels depleted during the winter and boosting supplies before the summer vacation season. Severe winter weather across much of the country forced the cancellation of more than 1,500 drives.

The blood collected during the Penn State vs. Ohio State Fight for Life will help supply blood needed at hospitals in both the Greater Alleghenies and Central Ohio Regions of the American Red Cross. A unit of blood has a shelf life of only 42 days, so the supply must be continually replenished. Every two seconds someone needs blood in the U.S.

Pizza and other snacks will be provided at all Fight for Life drives. Donors will receive a free American Red Cross tumbler cup (while supplies last) and be entered for a chance to win a football autographed by football coach James Franklin.

Blood donation appointments are strongly recommended and can be made at Most healthy people age 17 and older, or 16 with parental consent, who weigh at least 110 pounds, may be eligible to donate blood and platelets. Donors who are 18 and younger must also meet specific height and weight requirements. Those with specific eligibility questions should call the Red Cross Donor Client Support Center at 866-236-3276. All presenting donors should bring their Red Cross donor cards or other forms of identification to the blood drive.
