UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Wayne Sebastianelli M.D., Kalanek Professor in Orthopedics and director of athletic medicine at Penn State, will present "Heads Up! Kids and Sports-Related Brain Injuries" at the third Research Unplugged event of the spring semester on Thursday, April 3, at 12:30 p.m. in a special location: the Pegula Ice Arena's Pegula Club Room.

Visitor parking is available at the East Parking Deck at the rate of $1.00 per hour (cash only). The East Deck is located on Bigler Road near the Berkey Creamery and is just a five-minute walk from the Pegula Ice Arena.

The Penn State All-Sports Museum is co-sponsoring the event.

Dr. Sebastianelli, a past president of the Pennsylvania Orthopaedic Society, is widely published in the medical literature on sports injuries. He is affiliated with Penn State's Center for Sport Concussion Research and Service, home to cutting-edge facilities focused on traumatic brain injuries in athletics.

In his presentation, Dr. Sebastianelli will tackle a topic much in the news: our increasing awareness of how to better prevent and treat sports-related concussions among kids and teens. He and his Penn State colleagues, including Professor of Kinesiology Sam Slobounov, are pushing the boundaries of traditional diagnostic methods for brain injuries. Through their NIH-funded Kinesiology Virtual Reality Lab, they use virtual reality in conjunction with traditional brain imaging research to more accurately assess and diagnose traumatic brain injuries.

Research Unplugged is in its 10th year of bringing together a broad range of Penn State researchers and the State College community for informal conversation.

All events will be held from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. each Thursday through April 24, and are free and open to the public, with complimentary light refreshments. The series is made possible with the support and sponsorship of Penn State and Schlow Centre Region Library.
