The Center for the Performing Arts presents the male vocal ensemble Cantus in two experiences involving University Park choir members on March 31. Both are open to the public free of charge.

The Penn State choral ensemble Essence of Joy shares its music with Cantus at 3:30 p.m. in the Worship Hall of the Pasquerilla Spiritual Center. Anthony Leach, professor of music and Essence of Joy director, will lead the 60-minute open rehearsal and workshop.

The members of Cantus will also interact with the Penn State Glee Club in the Worship Hall on March 31. Christopher Kiver, director of choral activities at Penn State, will lead that 80-minute session beginning at 4:40 p.m.

Cantus presents their program "A Place for Us" on Tuesday, April 1 at 7:30 p.m. in the Worship Hall of the Pasquerilla Spiritual Center. The concert reminds audiences that, even in our increasingly complex and diverse nation, we share many common values — the desire for individual freedom, hard work, spirituality, family, and, most importantly, a place to call home. This presentation is a component of the Center for the Performing Arts Classical Music Project. With support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the project provides opportunities to engage students, faculty and the community with classical music artists and programs. Acclaimed as “the premier men’s vocal ensemble in the United States” (Fanfare), Cantus is known worldwide for its trademark warmth and blend and its engaging performances of music ranging from the Renaissance to the 21st century. The Washington Post has hailed the ensemble’s sound as having both “exalting finesse” and “expressive power” and refers to its music making as “spontaneous grace.” Cantus performs more than 70 concerts each year both in national and international touring, as well as in its home of Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota. Past performances have brought Cantus to the stages of the Kennedy Center, UCLA, San Francisco Performances, Atlanta’s Spivey Hall, Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival, and New York’s Merkin Concert Hall. During the 2012-2013 season, Cantus makes its first trip to the Middle East with appearances in Muscat, Oman and Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, along with performances in Chicago, Washington DC, Dallas/Fort Worth among numerous other North American engagements.
