Third Coast Percussion to perform in Logan Series at Behrend

March 17, 2014

Third Coast Percussion, an ensemble that melds the energy of rock music with the style of classical chamber works, will perform Wednesday, March 26, at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College.

The performance is part of Music at Noon: The Logan Series and takes place at noon in the McGarvey Commons of the Reed Union Building. Admission is free and free reserved parking will be available in the Reed lot.

Third Coast Percussion, the ensemble-in-residence at the University of Notre Dame’s DeBartolo Performing Arts Center, is known for its strong percussion repertoire. The ensemble enhances its performances by encouraging the audience to use free iPhone and iPad apps that take a deeper look at the group’s music.

In 2012, Third Coast Percussion collaborated with composer Augusta Read Thomas for the album “Resounding Earth.” The recording has been lauded by critics.

“In ‘Resounding Earth,’ a constellation of singing, ringing and chiming bells, gongs and other metallic implements, representing cultures and traditions from around the world, serves to honor nine venerated 20th-century composers,” Steve Smith wrote in a November 2013 New York Times review. “Bliss out to Ms. Thomas’ transfixing shimmer on the immaculately recorded CD, and marvel at the ensemble performing the intricate work on the accompanying DVD.”

Music at Noon: The Logan Series receives major support from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Kay Logan Trust, and receives additional funding from the Penn State Behrend Student Activity Fee, Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts, the Erie Arts Endowment of ArtsErie and Target.
