College welcomes two new faculty for spring 2014 semester

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Two new faculty members joined the Penn State College of Engineering at the start of spring semester.

The faculty members are Sumeet Kumar Gupta, assistant professor of electrical engineering, and Xiaofeng Liu, assistant professor of civil engineering.

Prior to joining Penn State, Gupta was a senior engineer at Qualcomm, where he developed circuit design techniques and methodologies for analysis and benchmarking of standard cells.

Gupta's research includes exploration of novel devices and circuits for low-power high-performance variation-aware very large scale in silicon and nonsilicon technologies, with an emphasis on co-design between different levels of abstraction. He is also interested in device-circuit modeling of emerging and exploratory technologies, including charge- and spin-based logic and memories.

Before coming to Penn State, Liu served as an assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Liu's research focuses on computational fluid dynamics, environmental fluid mechanics, sediment transport and erosion control, land surface process and morphodynamics, multiphase flow and water quality modeling.

His work has led to an innovative computational methodology and modeling framework to tackle the multi-scale and multi-dimensional problems when turbulent flow interacts with porous materials, such as riverine and coastal environments.
