Curley Center hosts investigative reporting session

The training director for Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) is set to conduct a weekend workshop on developing and executing hard-edged enterprise stories Jan. 25-26 at the University Park campus in a program sponsored by the John Curley Center for Sports Journalism.

Megan Luther will teach more than 15 students techniques for breaking investigative stories, particularly sports stories, during the weekend session, with a particular emphasis on more effectively using the Internet, mining paper and electronic databases and fighting for public records.

"Our aim with this free workshop is to give our students a leg up as they enter the professional world by introducing them to the kinds of skills they will need to crack the biggest stories," said John Affleck, director of the Curley Center and the Knight Chair in Sports Journalism and Society.

Investigative Reporters and Editors Inc. is a grassroots nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of investigative reporting. IRE was formed in 1975 to create a forum in which journalists throughout the world could help each other by sharing story ideas, news gathering techniques and news sources.

The Curley Center, established in 2003 as a first-of-its-kind focus area in higher education, explores issues and trends in sports journalism through instruction, outreach, programming and research.
