Director plays leading role in efforts to standardize enterprise architecture

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Brian Cameron, executive director of the Center for Enterprise Architecture at Penn State’s College of Information Sciences and Technology (IST), has been named to the governance board for the Enterprise Architecture Body of Knowledge (EABOK) initiative and EABOK Consortium, which were recently launched by the MITRE Corp. and offers enterprise architecture (EA) practitioners and researchers a centralized location for exchanging knowledge about the profession.

“It is a great honor to be asked to be on the governing board of the EABOK and EABOK Consortium,” Cameron said. “This type of international effort is greatly needed for the field of enterprise architecture.”

The MITRE Corp. is a nonprofit organization that provides systems engineering, research and development, and information technology support to the government. EABOK transitions the organization’s original publication, “The Guide to the (Evolving) Enterprise Architecture Body of Knowledge,” from a stand-alone MITRE document to an online community resource. The information that can be shared on the site includes methodologies, perspectives on the EA discipline and research results. 

In addition to developing and hosting the website, MITRE was instrumental in establishing the EABOK Consortium — a broad spectrum of senior EA leaders hailing from industry, government, academia and professional associations. The consortium manages the EABOK structure and content, including the collection and review of submitted material — new or previously published — posted to the site. The consortium is also helping to evolve the field through information sharing, hosting face-to-face meetings between EA leaders and fostering dialogue among practitioners. 

Enterprise architecture — a discipline and strategic knowledge asset — helps businesses and organizations evolve to meet changing business needs. Enterprise architects analyze areas of common activity within or between organizations where information and other resources are exchanged. The analysis offers managers a guide for transitioning organizations to meet strategic goals and adapt to change by integrating strategy, business goals and technology.  

The purpose of the Center for Enterprise Architecture, which was established in January 2011, is to gather intellectual resources across Penn State to address open and important research concerns and questions that span the design, functioning and governance of contemporary, information-driven enterprises. Through multi-disciplinary and interdisciplinary research methods, the center looks to address large-scale applications such as health care informatics, large service-based and manufacturing firms, nonprofit initiatives, federal and state government transformation, and the design of homeland security agencies.
