duoJalal, a musical collaboration of classical viola and world percussion, will perform Monday, Jan. 27, at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College.
The performance is part of Music at Noon: The Logan Series and takes place at noon in the McGarvey Commons of the Reed Union Building. Admission is free and free reserved parking will be available in the Reed lot.
duoJalal, a husband and wife pairing, focuses on a variety of different musical genres, including classical, klezmer, Middle Eastern and jazz. Yousif Sheronick, the duo’s percussionist, is of Lebanese descent and is known as a master of the Egyptian frame drum. His wife and the duo’s violist, Kathryn Lockwood, is also the violist for the internationally renowned Lark Quartet.
“If this is what world music's future holds, bring on the party,” music critic John Terauds wrote in a Toronto Star review of duoJalal’s album, “A Different World.”
The duo’s name pays homage to 13th century poet Jalal a din Rumi, whose words brought together people of different religions, cultures and races. duoJalal seeks to accomplish this same goal through music.
Music at Noon: The Logan Series receives major support from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Kay Logan Trust and receives additional funding from the Penn State Behrend Student Activity Fee, Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts, the Erie Arts Endowment of ArtsErie and Target.
