College of Medicine grad students take oath

Incoming Penn State College of Medicine graduate students pursuing master of science and doctoral degrees participated in the annual Graduate Student Oath Ceremony on Aug. 23 on the Hershey campus.

During the ceremony, first-year graduate students took an oath to uphold the values of integrity, professionalism, and scholarship throughout their academic careers. Symbolic of their initiation into the community of biomedical scientists, the 34 first-year doctoral students received white lab coats, and the 28 master's students each received a gift. A welcome picnic was held immediately following the ceremony.

Prompted by an article in Science magazine, a group of College of Medicine graduate students spent a year developing an oath that reflected Penn State values. This is the fifth year for the Graduate Student Oath Ceremony.
