Registration open for 2013 Diverse Literacies Conference

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Registration is now open for the 2013 Diverse Literacies Conference presented by Penn State Lehigh Valley and the Lehigh Valley Writing Project. The conference will focus on "Nurturing Diverse Learners through Student-Centered Instruction," and takes place from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sept. 28 at Bear Creek Mountain Resort and Conference Center in Macungie, Pa.

Yetta Goodman, Regents Professor Emerita at the University of Arizona College of Education in the Department of Language, Reading and Culture, will deliver the keynote speech titled "Revaluing Readers, Teachers and Reading" on Sept. 28. She will also lead a pre-conference workshop on Sept. 27 titled "What Are Your Major Questions About How the Learner's Language Influences Learning to Read and Write in the Classroom?"

Goodman consults with education departments and speaks at conferences regarding issues of language, teaching and learning. Her many publications in support of students and teachers focus on early literacy, miscue analysis, and reading and writing processes. She has popularized the term "kidwatching" encouraging teachers to be professional observers of the language and learning of their students. She is a past president of National Council of Teachers of English, Center for Expansion of Language and Thinking, and has served on the International Reading Association Board of Directors. She is a past president and member of the Reading Hall of Fame. Her whole language philosophy and extensive writing is focused on classrooms, students and teachers.

The early registration fee, which will be accepted until Sept. 20, is $59. Late and on-site registration is $69. On-site registration is limited. The pre-conference dinner workshop is $50.
