El-Deiry to serve as Cancer Institute interim director

July 24, 2013

Dr. Wafik El-Deiry has agreed to serve as interim director of Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute, effective Aug. 1. He will assume this role following the departure of Dr. Tom Loughran, who is leaving Penn State for the University of Virginia next month. El-Deiry will lead the Cancer Institute on an interim basis until a new permanent director is appointed.

El-Deiry joined Penn State Hershey in 2010 as professor of medicine, division chief of hematology-oncology and associate director for translational research for the Cancer Institute. He also holds the Rose Dunlap Division Chair in Hematology/Oncology. Prior to joining Penn State Hershey, El-Deiry held a faculty appointment at the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator from 1995 to 2004. He was named an American Cancer Society Research Professor in January 2009.

A national search for a new Cancer Institute director, chaired by Dr. Dani Zander, chair of the Department of Pathology, is under way.
