Penn State Smeal MBA team wins marketing case competition in Texas

A group of Penn State Smeal College of Business MBA students won first prize in the second annual Rice MBA Marketing Case Competition, held on April 6 in Houston, Texas.

The winning team, comprised of both first- and second-year students, included Arvind Dutta, Rahul Panicker, Shridhar Kumar and Ankit Mahajan.

“The case required us to deliver a marketing pitch as a supplier to the senior management of a Middle Eastern oil company,” said Dutta. “We used several business marketing concepts learned from Professor [Ralph] Oliva’s business-to-business marketing class, as well as concepts from Professor [Christopher W.] Craighead’s strategic procurement class.”

The one-day case competition, sponsored by Cameron -- a global company in the oil and gas industry -- granted teams four hours to work on their cases.

“This was very challenging compared to other case competitions where you usually have a day or two,” Dutta said. “Judges from Cameron were truly impressed with our team’s ability to develop such a thorough recommendation in a relatively short amount of time.”

The Penn State Smeal MBA team’s first prize award totaled $2,000. The University of Texas at Dallas Naveen Jindal School of Management took second place, and third place went to the University of Houston C. T. Bauer College of Business.
