Students to host 16th annual environmental science symposium

Graduate and undergraduate students will have a chance to showcase their work in the environmental sciences at the 16th annual Environmental Chemistry and Microbiology Student Symposium March 15-16 at Penn State University Park.

The student-run symposium includes oral and poster presentations, a photo contest and T-shirt design contest. Details, including a schedule of events, are online at www.essc.psu.edu/ECSS/. The deadline for submitting an abstract is March 1.

The keynote speakers will be William Arnold, the Joseph T. and Rose S. Ling Professor and associate department head in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Minnesota; Raina M. Maier, professor of soil, water and environmental science at the University of Arizona; and John M. Regan, associate professor of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Penn State.

The symposium provides students with opportunities to interact with other students and faculty across disciplines including environmental chemistry, engineering and microbiology. The event also gives undergraduate and graduates a chance to collaborate with students from other universities. In 2012, students from Carnegie Mellon, Howard, Cornell, Lincoln and Rider universities, along with the University of Maryland and Southeast University in China participated in the symposium.

That included students studying crop and soil sciences, plant pathology, veterinary and biomedical sciences, energy and mineral engineering, chemical engineering, geosciences, entomology, civil and environmental engineering, biology, forensic science and chemistry.

Penn State departments involved in holding the event include Ecosystem Sciences and Management, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Agricultural and Biological Engineering, Chemistry, Geosciences, Meteorology, Forensic Science, Biology, Ecology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

The event will take place in the Forest Resources Building. More information is available at www.essc.psu.edu/ECSS/.
