Youth sports camp teaches more than athletics

June 27, 2002

More than 200 students from the Alle-Kiski region are participating in the National Youth Sports Camp (NYSP) from June 17 to July 20 at Penn State New Kensington. The five-week program, held jointly at the campus and Valley High School in New Kensington, is free to eligible participants ages 10 through 16. The camp teaches concepts of respect, responsibility, caring and community pride, while coaches teach children to improve their skills in swimming, basketball, martial arts, football, volleyball, and softball. Campers also receive hands-on instruction in math, science, physical fitness, nutrition and job responsibility. "This is one of only 190 such programs in the country," said activities director Jay Moser, an elementary school teacher in the New Kensington-Arnold School District. "It's not just a take-the-balls-out-of-the-bag-and-play-basketball program. It improves the quality of these kids' lives." For more on NYSP, visit
