WHITE HOUSE SCIENCE MEDAL CEREMONY TO HONOR RAO

Calyampudi R. Rao, emeritus holder of the Eberly Family chair in Statistics and director of the Center for Multivariate Analysis, will receive the National Medal of Science in a ceremony Wednesday at the White House in Washington, D.C.
President George W. Bush will bestow medals to 14 scientists and one engineer who were named the 2001 National Science and Technology Medal Laureates. The honor is the nation's highest award for lifetime achievement in fields of scientific research.
The ceremony will be streamed live over the Web at http://www.nationalmedals.org/ beginning at 2 p.m. tomorrow. Newswire Extra will provide coverage on Thursday.
Rao's theoretical work helped lay the foundation of modern statistics. He also has concentrated his efforts on employing statistical methods to solve practical problems in such diverse fields as economics, anthropology, geology, medical diagnosis and national planning.
