Darby Steps Down; Bonk Named Athletic Director

Bob Darby, instructor in kinesiology, stepped down as director of athletics at Penn State New Kensington on Sept. 11. Theresa Bonk, assistant to the director of student affairs, has assumed the position as acting athletic director. Darby, a 1966 Penn state graduate and a faculty member since 1968, resigned his athletics duties but will continue to teach classes as well as assume the duties of intramural director. Darby's teaching load increased when Bob Howard, assistant professor of kinesiology, retired during the summer. Darby, who coached baseball, women's basketball and wrestling in the 1970s, replaced Howard as athletic director in 1985. Bonk will continue with her current duties. Bonk earned a bachelor's degree in communications from Clarion University and a master's degree in student affairs in higher education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She is also a graduate of Class IX of Leadership Alle-Kiski Valley. For more information on athletics at the campus, visit
