Newswire Extra: Maple harvest time at Shaver's Creek

Springtime is maple harvest time at Shaver's Creek Environmental Center, an outreach resource of Penn State. The center's annual Maple Harvest Festival will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, March 22 and 23, on the center grounds.

The festival is geared to all ages and covers the making of maple syrup from tapping a tree to boiling down the sap. Visitors can help with these tasks while learning about maple trees and the folklore associated with the maple sugaring process from costumed interpreters. Live folk music, animal shows and natural history walks will also be offered, as well as an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The program costs $5 for nonmembers ages 4 and over; members are admitted free. The pancake breakfast costs $4 per person for ages 4 and over.
