LV faculty member receives prestigious Atherton Award

Dr. Jacqueline S. McLaughlin was one of four faculty members selected to receive the 2003 George W. Atherton Award for Excellence in Teaching. Established in 1989, the award is named after Penn State University's seventh president and honors excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level. The award was presented at a luncheon on March 24 at the Nittany Lion Inn at University Park. McLaughlin has been part of the faculty at Penn State Lehigh Valley since 1990, starting as an adjunct faculty member while finishing her Ph.D. in cell and developmental biology from Rutgers University/ Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. In exploring the biodiversity of world ecosystems, McLaughlin has taken her students to study the desert islands of the Galapagos; the taiga, tundra, and rainforest of Alaska; the coral reef, tropical rainforests and savanna of Australia; and coral reefs and tropical rainforests of Costa Rica. "As Dr. McLaughlin's student and advisee for the last three years, I realized that I have been privileged to learn from one of the most brilliant women I have ever met," states Adrienne Dorward, a senior Applied Psychology and Life Science double major student at Penn State Lehigh Valley.
