Penn State Erie dedicates campus as nationally recognized arboretum

The Arboretum at Penn State Erie was dedicated April 23 in a community ceremony, culminating efforts by the Penn State Erie faculty and staff to earn such a distinction for the beautiful acreage left to the college by Mary Behrend. Long recognized by area environmentalists as a haven for some of the area's most interesting trees, Penn State Erie became a member of the American Association of Botanical Gardens and Arboreta earlier this year. This formalizes the college's status as an arboretum and opens the way to developing public education, outreach and research programs focusing on the college's extraordinary collection of native and exotic trees.
