Spanish education students share knowledge with local children

May 02, 2003

Words like "hola" and "buenos dias" may be foreign to most elementary-age school students, but not to the students at McAuliffe Heights at Irving Elementary School. For the past year, education students from Penn State Altoona have been working with third- and fourth-grade students at McAuliffe Heights to help them learn the basics of Spanish communication. Each of the five Penn State students taught a 30-minute lesson once a week, complete with homework assignments, tests and Spanish craft activities. The children were very responsive to the students' teaching style and looked forward to their Spanish lessons and activities.
