Oldest Penn State Altoona graduate to lead commencement

May 09, 2003

Penn State Altoona will be recognizing a special guest at its upcoming commencement. Mildred Turner, the oldest Penn State Altoona graduate, will process at the ceremony on Saturday, May 10. At the age of 77, Turner was awarded an associate in arts degree in letters, arts and sciences with a 3.15 grade point average at the end of fall 2000. After working for 22 years at Warnaco Co., Turner retired in 1990 at the age of 67. She immediately contacted Penn State Altoona's adult center about enrolling after learning about Penn State's GO-60 program. She enrolled in 1990 and continued her studies on a part-time basis; however, her grandchildren's high school and college graduations, plus her brother's unexpected serious illness, prevented her from participating in commencement ceremonies since fall 2000. She is also the third generation in her family to graduate from Penn State.
