Alumni Cool Career: Thriller author brings chills to classrooms

With such popular action yarns as "MEG: A Novel of Deep Terror," "Goliath," "The Trench" and "Domain" to his credit, suburban Philadelphia native Steve Alten has certainly departed from his initial direction in life as a 1981 B.S. degree holder in health and physical education from Penn State. Also a holder of two graduate degrees in sports administration from other institutions, Alten tried his hand at a water treatment franchise and worked in a wholesale meat plant before publishing "MEG." After the thriller was named the number one book for reluctant readers by the Young Adult Library Services Association, Alten started a non-profit Adopt-An-Author program for middle and high school readers. He recently signed books at Penn State Abington.
