Football team's 'Lift for Life' raises $10,000+ to fight kidney cancer

July 08, 2003

University Park, Pa. -- The 2003 college football season may still be more than a month and a half away, but that didn't stop approximately 50 Nittany Lion student-athletes, among others, from getting together to tackle an opponent that can affect everyone -- kidney cancer.

The first Penn State Lift For Life, a concept developed and organized by three Penn State football players, has raised more than $10,000 for the Kidney Cancer Association. The goal of the event was to help raise money and awareness for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of kidney cancer, which has affected family members of several squad members.

Senior football players Dave Costlow of Lansdale, Damone Jones of Philadelphia and Scott Shirley of Enola led the effort, which consisted of 15 teams of four beginning a series of 13 events at 6 a.m. The competition was designed to test the participants' mental and physical toughness, and included some traditional weightlifting and conditioning events such as bench press, leg press and chin-ups. Also included in the competition were some more extreme events like the giant tire flip and a 200-yard sprint while carrying 100-pound plates in either hand.

Teams earned points depending on how quickly they accomplished the activity or how many repetitions they completed. It took 30-40 minutes for each team to complete the activities, with the final team concluding by mid-afternoon. By that time, $10,438 had been raised for the Kidney Cancer Association, with donations still being accepted.

Twelve teams of Nittany Lion players, two teams of Penn State strength and conditioning coaches and one team of Lock Haven University students participated in the event.

The winning team was comprised of Costlow, Gino Capone, Mike Lukac and tailback Tim Shaw. Second place went to the team of Tony Johnson, Calvin Lowry, Zack Mills and Jimi Mitchell, and finishing third was Jones, Shirley, Charles Rush and Andy Ryland.

The public can still support the Penn State Lift for Life. All donations will be contributed to the Kidney Cancer Association to help support research and awareness.
