Beaver faculty member introduces product to aid those with memory loss

Beaver, Pa. -- Fred Kellinger, part-time lecturer in business at Penn State Beaver, is introducing a new digital tool that is designed to help individuals who suffer from short-term memory loss to manage their own affairs and achieve greater independence.

The Jogger system, a small, wearable personal digital assistance device, has been released commercially through the company Independent Concepts, Inc., of which Kellinger is president.

The Jogger presents tasks and prompts the needs of the user, records the user's response to tasks and prompts and transmits the results to the user's caregiver or therapist for analysis and modification. The Jogger "speaks" to the user by presenting verbal tasks and clues.

The system consists of a commercially available personal digital assistant (PDA) and two software modules. It can provide directions and specific information and, according to Kellinger, can be used for just about anything that can be presented using text or spoken words. The Jogger system is designed for individuals with diagnoses including traumatic brain injury, stroke, and multiple sclerosis and can be used by many individuals who have limited hand control.

Kellinger's company, Independent Concepts, Inc. was founded in 1999 to develop and apply new technologies that provide increased independence to mentally and physically challenged individuals leading to improved quality of life.
