Pre-game 'Huddle' series returns for 10th season

Alumni and friends will have more than just tailgates and touchdowns to enjoy again this football season as Huddle with the Faculty, the lecture series featuring Penn State faculty, enters its 10th season.

Huddle is held each home football Saturday at The Nittany Lion Inn on the University Park campus. The one-hour program begins at 9 a.m. An exception to the start time will be those days when the football game is slated for a 3 p.m. or later kickoff, in which case Huddle will begin at 10 a.m.

In addition to interactive presentations, Huddle attendees are treated to a complimentary continental breakfast. The program is free to the public with free parking available in the Nittany Parking Deck.

This year's lineup features a range of discussions from vascular surgery and nutrition to public policy and information technology.

The schedule follows:

— Aug. 30: David Han, a Penn State alumnus and member of the Alumni Council, "Minimally invasive vascular surgery: Big operations through small incisions. The wave of the future?" on the advantages and challenges of vascular surgery. This Huddle is scheduled for 10 a.m.

— Sept. 6: Iyunolu Osagie, associate professor of English, College of the Liberal Arts, "Seeing is believing: Spielberg's AMISTAD movie — An alternative response from Sierra Leone," on the powerful influence of Hollywood's creative cultural lenses;

— Sept. 20: Amy Glasmeier, professor of geography and regional planning, College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, "One nation, pulling apart: The origin and nature of persistent poverty in the U.S.," on poverty and American public policy;

— Sept. 27: Jorge Schement, distinguished professor of communications and information policy, College of Communications, "Wiring the castle: Information technology and the transformation of the American home," on the influence of information technology on the American home;

—Oct. 4: Kristine Clark, director of sports nutrition for Intercollegiate Athletics, Orthopedics in the College of Medicine, and assistant professor of nutrition in the College of Health and Human Development, "Top 10 changes to improve your diet," on dietary advice and suggestions for improving health and energy;

— Nov. 1: Steven Walton, assistant professor of science, technology and society, College of Engineering, "How war became scientific: Research, governments and military technology," on the use of technology in military engagements; and

— Nov. 15: Cary Libkin, professor and head of the Department of Musical Theatre, College of Arts and Architecture, "Penn State Musical Theatre," on musical theatre at Penn State.

Huddle with the Faculty is an Alumni Outreach program, which links alumni to the many continuing education products and services of the University, including professional education, career development, personal enrichment, online learning and study tours.
