Centre Region chosen as Pennsylvania's top sports town

The Centre Region, home of Penn State's University Park campus, has long been recognized for athletic excellence thanks to the many student-athletes who've worn the Blue and White of the Nittany Lions and the Lady Lions. When combined with the sports offerings of the Centre Region parks and recreation department, it's no suprise that the area would be tabbed as Sports Illustrated's 50th Anniversary Sportstown for the state of Pennsylvania. The honor, bestowed by Gov. Edward Rendell at halftime of the Penn State-Temple football game last Saturday (Aug. 30), recognizes the Centre Region -- which includes the Borough of State College along with the townships of College, Ferguson, Halfmoon, Harris and Patton -- for its vibrant sports and recereation opportunities, and was highlighted in a recent issue of SI.
