Callahan named 2003 science co-op student of the year

Ryan Callahan, a biology major from Port Matilda, has been selected as the recipient of the Penn State Eberly College of Science Cooperative Education Program Co-op Student of the Year Award. The award is given annually to outstanding participants in the Eberly College of Science Cooperative Education Program in recognition of their academic achievements and contributions to their employers, the University, the community, and the field of cooperative education.

Callahan was nominated by Jeffrey Grimm, a scientist in the Drug Evaluation Department of Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research and Development, L.L.C. Ryan's primary responsibility at J&J was to conduct process development optimization using robotic technologies. He completed his rotation during the summer and fall of 2002, and a summary of his work was presented by Cynthia A. Maryanoff, a distinguished research fellow at J&J, at the American Chemical Society's national meeting held in New York City on Sept. 8. Ryan completed his third rotation during the summer of 2003 at the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health, where he acquired laboratory experience in nutrition and molecular carcinogenesis. He will be inducted into the Penn State chapter of Kappa Theta Epsilon, the national co-op honor society, in December. He will receive a $500 award and a certificate of achievement, and Penn State will honor him at a luncheon during the fall semester.
