Student receives U.S. Department of Homeland Security Scholarship

Schreyer Honors College scholar Todd Bacastow, a senior majoring in information, sciences and technology, recently received a new scholarship from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Bacastow was considered for the scholarship after he researched the creation of the department as an intern at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C. His research was compiled into briefings and added to a white paper addressing issues relating the department's formation. He also published an article on biological agent detection technology, exploring its practical applications in augmenting national security while considering the new policy issues it creates. Under the Homeland Security Scholars and Fellows Program, the scholarship supports the development and monitoring of the next generation of scientists as they study ways to prevent terrorist attacks within the United States, reduce America's vulnerability to terrorism, and minimize damage and recovery from attacks that occur.
