Penn State to hold commencement ceremonies Dec. 20

University Park, Pa. -- Penn State's University Park campus will hold its 2003 fall commencement ceremonies for approximately 3,261 associate, baccalaureate and graduate degree students on Saturday, Dec. 20.

Undergraduate baccalaureate and associate degrees will be awarded at
9 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. in the Bryce Jordan Center. Graduate degrees will be awarded at 4 p.m. in Eisenhower Auditorium.

As of early December, 3,261 students are scheduled to receive degrees at the University Park ceremonies. That figure includes 10 associate, 2,534 baccalaureate, 528 master's, and 189 doctoral degree students. Systemwide, Penn State will graduate a total of 4,721 students -- approximately 318 with associate degrees, 3,393 baccalaureate degrees, 1,006 graduate degrees, and four juris doctorate degrees.

Penn State President Graham Spanier will preside at the undergraduate baccalaureate and associate degree ceremonies and the Graduate School program. Rodney Erickson, executive vice president and provost, will preside over the conferring of the degrees at the baccalaureate and associate degree ceremonies, and Eva Pell, vice president for research and dean of the Graduate School, will preside over the conferring of the degrees at the Graduate School ceremony.

Distinguished scholar, educator and administrator Vartan Gregorian, who will deliver the commencement address at the 12:30 p.m. undergraduate degree ceremony, will receive an honorary doctorate of humane letters. As president of the Carnegie Corporation of New York, one of the nation's largest philanthropic foundations, Gregorian oversees a multimillion-dollar grant program that promotes education and peace. Before assuming his current position, Gregorian was founding dean of the faculty of arts and sciences and provost at the University of Pennsylvania, served as president of Brown University, and was president of the New York Public Library. Gregorian received his Ph.D. in history from Stanford University. He is the author of several books and has been honored on numerous occasions by national organizations for his work.

Also delivering commencement addresses are A. Catherine Ross, Penn State professor of nutrition and Dorothy Foehr Huck Chair in nutritional sciences, who will speak at the graduate school degree ceremony and Patricia A. Woertz, Penn State alumna and executive vice president of the ChevronTexaco Corporation, who will speak at the 9 a.m. undergraduate degree ceremony.

The following colleges will hold undergraduate baccalaureate degree ceremonies at 9 a.m. in The Bryce Jordan Center:

• College of Engineering
• School of Information Sciences and Technology

The following colleges will hold undergraduate associate and baccalaureate degree ceremonies at 12:30 p.m. in the Bryce Jordan Center:
• College of Arts and Architecture
• College of Communications
• College of Education
• College of Health and Human Development
• College of the Liberal Arts
• Eberly College of Science
