Major upgrades to interrupt e-mail, computing services

Academic Services and Emerging Technologies (ASET), a unit of Information Technology Services, is planning some major hardware and systems upgrades in the coming days. These outages will impact all users at all campus locations.

E-mail Server
ASET will upgrade the hardware and power supply for the e-mail server between 5 and 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 21. During this time, will not accept connections. The outage also will affect those who use Penn State WebMail to check e-mail via For more information, check the Web at

Computing services
In an effort to better provide and support distributed computing services, ASET will perform a major upgrade to one of the large central services computers (otherwise known as " the SP") between 5 and 11 a.m. Saturday, March 6. Several major services requiring authentication with a Penn State Access Account userid and password will be unavailable during this time frame, including e-mail, a variety of Web and file services, the Student Computer Labs, eLion, ANGEL and Napster registration. Access Accounts-based services
ASET will perform a major upgrade to its centralized accounts system for user services March 7 to 9, which is the beginning of the University's spring break week. During the three-day outage, several Penn State Access Account-based services will be not be available, including access to Penn State Access Account Signature Stations, application for Penn State Access Account services such as personal Web space, changes to printing limits and charges, changes to directory information and password resets.
