First annual Math Competition open to all undergraduates

University Park, Pa. -- The first annual Mathematics Competition -- an event that is designed for all Penn State undergraduate students, both math majors and non-math majors alike -- will take place on March 17. The deadline for registration is March 5. The Penn State Math Club, which is organizing the event, is offering cash prizes for the top five contestants: $100 for first place, $80 for second place, $60 for third place, $40 for fourth place and $20 for fifth place. Funds for the prizes are being provided by the Department of Mathematics.

"The contest questions are logical and mathematical, but do not require formal background to answer correctly," says the club's president, Stas Sheynkop.

To register as a contestant, send an e-mail note with "Math Competition" as the subject to szs107@psu.edu.

A $2 participation fee is required. Full details of the event are available on the club's Web site at http://www.clubs.psu.edu/up/math
