Tragedy unfolds in 'Othello'

The Guthrie Theater of Minneapolis will present "Othello" at 8 p.m. Friday, March 26, and Saturday, March 27, in Eisenhower Auditorium on the University Park campus.

Guthrie Theatre's tour is part of Shakespeare in American Communities — an initiative sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts and The Sallie Mae Fund in cooperation with Arts Midwest. In an effort to introduce Shakespeare to a new generation nationwide, the program provides educational materials and activities to support performances of five Shakespeare plays by seven companies in each of the 50 states.

As part of this program, the Guthrie company will arrive Tuesday, March 23, on the University Park campus, and participate in educational activities, including visits to area high schools, University English classes and senior citizens groups. The company also is scheduled to stage "Othello" in a daytime performance for school students.

Tickets for "Othello" are $29 for general audience members; $16 for full-time University Park students; and $19 for people 18 and younger. For tickets or information, call (814) 863-0255 or (800) ARTS-TIX.

Artistic Viewpoints, an informal discussion about the performance sponsored by the Center for the Performing Arts Community Advisory Council, is offered in the Eisenhower Auditorium Conference Room one hour before each performance. Visit http://www.cpa.psu.edu/on the Web.
