Activities across campus celebrate women's achievements

University Park, Pa. -- Several activities celebrating women are planned across the University Park campus to mark Women's History Month and Penn State's Commission for Women Awareness week (March 22-26).

Women in the Arts Celebration, March 18-19
The second annual Women in the Arts celebration will take place Thursday, March 18, and Friday, March 19, in the HUB-Robeson Center's Heritage Hall, at 7:30 p.m. both evenings.

Women in the Arts is the second annual celebration of women artists who bring issues that face women to light in an entertaining manner. This program strives to educate and empower through the expression of song, spoken word, poetry and dance, painting and other material art.

Entertainment for Thursday evening includes Whiplash and Savoir Faire, among other groups. Courtney Jossart and Allison Schuette will share short stories. Maria Elizabeth McVoy will share poetry, and Eliza Pennypaker--a Penn State professor, director of Penn State campus planning, and winner of the Korean War Veteran's Memorial design contest--will be speaking, as well.

Friday evening's entertainment will include the Alpha Omega Step Team. Dora McQuaid, a professor and poet with a sexual assault and domestic violence focus will share her poetry. Pat Payne, the national slam poet champion, will rock Heritage Hall with her slam poetry.

The celebration is brought to the community by the Undergraduate Student
Government and is funded by Allies, Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance, Student Affairs, The Commission for LGBTA Equity, The Commission for Women, UPAC, Womyn's Concerns, and numerous residence hall associations.

Admission is free. For more information, contact Emily Armbruster at
