Associate vice president for research sought

Applications and nominations are being accepted for the position of associate vice president for research.

The successful candidate will serve as director of strategic initiatives and report to the vice president for research.

Robert T. McGrath, who has served as associate vice president since 1999 and as a professor of engineering science and mechanics since 1996, has been appointed senior vice president for research at The Ohio State University, effective July 1.

Responsibilities of this position include direct oversight of several units including: Animal Resource Program, Center for Space Research Program, Marine Corps Research University, and the Worldwide University Network. This individual has oversight for institutional proposal/nomination submissions. A primary responsibility of this position is to assist with the development of major new initiatives that bring interested parties together from disparate colleges and geographic locations. Immediately, this individual will be responsible for charging the new Homeland Security Council and developing and implementing a major University strategic plan in this area.

The successful candidate will be actively involved in working with state and federal agencies; will require a breadth of knowledge of the University; and must have interest in, and appreciation for, a broad range of research and scholarly activities. Strength in the physical sciences and engineering will be considered an asset.

Candidates should have demonstrated accomplishments in initiating, organizing and managing major research programs in a university environment; extensive knowledge of interdisciplinary research and federal, state, industrial and foundation research funding; strong entrepreneurial, managerial, organizational and communications skills; and the ability to work effectively with faculty, administrators, government officials and industry. A tenured faculty candidate is preferred. Review of applications will begin April 22.
