Penn State students honored with numerous awards, scholarships

University Park, Pa. -- As the spring semester comes to a close, Penn State has announced that a number of honors have been bestowed upon numerous students.

Penn State senior wins Vertical Flight Foundation scholarship
Emilia Speal, a Penn State University senior and New Alexandria, Pa., native, was awarded the 2003 Vertical Flight Foundation Scholarship by the American Helicopter Society. Speal, the daughter of Audrey Speal and the late Clancy Speal, will graduate from the College of Engineering with a bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering.

Penn State grad student wins NASA award
Greg Richter, a Penn State graduate student, was awarded the NASA Graduate Student Research Fellowship. Richter, the son of Robert and Marian Richter of Wayland, Mass., was a Commonwealth Scholar at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He is currently a Ph.D. candidate with Penn State's Eberly College of Science. His Ph.D. thesis is focused on the role of nitric oxide during the gravitational response in Arabidopsis roots.

Penn State grad student wins NCAA scholarship
Jose Palacios, a Penn State graduate student and State College resident, has won the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. Palacios, the son of Jose and Maria Palacios, is currently working toward his master's degree in aerospace engineering and will finish this August. He will then begin his Ph.D. studies at Penn State before entering the astronaut-training program through the International Space Agency.

Penn State junior wins Hispanic College Fund award
Priscilla Baez, a Penn State junior, was awarded the Hispanic College Fund Scholarship. Baez, the daughter of Evelyn Diaz of Laurence Harbor, N.J., is a public relations major with a minor in sociology in the College of Communications.

Penn State senior wins two scholarships
Michelle Kinder, a Penn State senior and Schreyer Honors College scholar, was awarded the National Italian-American Foundation's Mid-Atlantic Regional Scholarship and the Sigma Xi Grant-in-Aid of Research. Kinder, the daughter of William and Frances Kinder of Bensalem, Pa., will graduate with honors from the Eberly College of Science with a bachelor's degree in biochemistry and a minor in molecular biology. She is currently researching and preparing her honors thesis on cytokines in breast cancer bone metastasis.

Penn State senior wins food science award
Erin Shirey, a Penn State senior, was awarded the Institute of Food Technologists Scholarship by the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT). Shirey, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ron Shirey of Sarver, Pa., is a food science major in the College of Agricultural Sciences.

Penn State senior wins American Nuclear Society award
Josh Potteiger, a Penn State senior, was awarded the Pittsburgh Local Section Undergraduate Scholarship Award by the American Nuclear Society. Potteiger, the son of Mark and Sherry Potteiger of Mechanicsburg, Pa., is a nuclear engineering and mechanical engineering major with a minor in mathematics.
