Penn State Board of Trustees meets today; President Spanier's remarks
Penn State's Board of Trustees is holding its regular, bi-monthly meeting today (May 14) on the University Park campus. In his opening remarks to the board, President Graham B. Spanier detailed the breadth of some of the most recent faculty research, and reviewed a recent report revealing that, contrary to myth, most Penn State students attend small classes with full-time faculty. Among other news at the University over the past two months, Spanier highlighted recent national-level student awards, reviewed the successes of Penn State athletic teams during the past academic year and publicly welcomed Blannie Bowen as the University's new vice provost for academic affairs.

Board hears an update on Penn State's 'Framework to Foster Diversity'
In an informational report to Penn State's Board of Trustees today (May 14), W. Terrell Jones, vice provost for educational equity, provided a review of the University's progress in meeting the challenges presented in "A Framework to Foster Diversity at Penn State: 1998-2003" and introduced the University's new strategic plan, "A Framework to Foster Diversity at Penn State: 2004-09."

Penn State Outreach continues to transform lives throughout the commonwealth
Continuing in its land-grant tradition, Penn State is playing a vital role in helping the state respond to key economic and social issues through Penn State Outreach programming, Craig Weidemann, vice president for Outreach, reported to the Board of Trustees today (May 14). By showcasing Penn State Outreach's comprehensive services designed to span the institution's mission of teaching, research and service, Weidemann emphasized how Outreach seeks to "transform lives and communities" throughout the commonwealth.

Trustees approve interim budget; Penn State awaits approval of state appropriation
Penn State adopts an interim budget each year so that it has an approved fiscal operating plan from the beginning of the fiscal year, July 1, until the next year's actual budget is approved by the University's Board of Trustees. Today (May 14), the board approved the interim maintenance and operating budget at the level of the current 2003-04 total operating budget of $2,560,309,000. This budget supports all Penn State operations and enterprises throughout the Commonwealth. No action on changes in tuition, salaries and wages, employee benefits, or other necessary expense increases will be taken until after the 2004-05 budget has been reviewed and approved by the Board of Trustees in July.

Penn State annouces election of Board of Trustees members
Penn State alumni, delegates of agricultural societies, and the Board (representatives of business and industry endeavors) recently elected six incumbents and one new member to serve on the University's Board of Trustees. University alumni re-elected incumbents Steve A. Garban and Paul V. Suhey, and elected George T. Henning, Jr. Delegates of agricultural societies re-elected incumbents Keith W. Eckel and Samuel E. Hayes, Jr. Delegates of industrial societies re-elected incumbents Edward P. Junker III and L.J. Rowell, Jr. The term of each trustee elected is three years, beginning July 1, 2004 and expiring on June 30, 2007.

Trustees approve laboratory purchase, new airport hangars
Penn State's Board of Trustees today (May 14) approved the purchase of a laboratory facility located near the University Park campus that will enable the University's Applied Research Laboratory to expand its activities. The Trustees also approved the design and construction of new hangars for private aircraft at the University Park Airport.

Alumni Association aims to be nation's most ambitious
The Penn State Alumni Association experienced changes in two of its top leadership positions last year, and with those changes have come an aggressive new agenda for the nation's largest alumni association. In an informational report to the Board of Trustees today (May 14), Marianne E. Alexander, Alumni Association president and president emerita of the Public Leadership Education Network, discussed the Association's recent initiatives and laid forth a bold vision to become the nation's most ambitious alumni organization.
