Children's Day opens Arts Festival

Children's Day activities are under way today (July 7) to open this year's edition of the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts in downtown State College and on Penn State's University Park campus. The Festival Shell on the Old Main lawn resounds with music and dance, and nearby, a variety of craft-related booths and educational opportunities await children's attention. A new exhibit this year is "Ixilum" by Architects of Air -- an inflatable luminarium that spans two-thirds the length of State College's Memorial Field. Inspired by ecclesiastical mosque architecture, it is built of PVC vinyl that was cut and assembled by hand in a former lace factory. Visitors entering "Ixilum" discover a colorful landscape of columns, passages and soaring spaces.
