Golf tournament to benefit research at Penn State Hershey

The ninth annual Pennsylvania Governor's Cup Charity Golf Tournament will tee off Monday, Aug. 2, at the Hershey Golf Club.

The annual event benefits Crohn's and colitis research in the Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery, Penn State Hershey Medical Center, College of Medicine.

This event, held in conjunction with the $100,000 Pennsylvania Governor's Cup Handicap race, is sponsored by Penn National Race Course to benefit the Carlino Fund for Inflammatory Bowel Disease research. Typically 200 to 250 individuals participate. Sponsors hope to raise $100,000 with this year's tournament.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), which includes Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, is a chronic intestinal illness that currently has no cure. Penn State Hershey Medical Center has been active in both the treatment of patients suffering from IBD and in research into new therapies for the illness. All funds raised from this event will go directly to benefit the Carlino Fund, established in 1995 by Peter Carlino, chief executive officer of Penn National Race Course, and Walter A. Koltun professor of surgery in the Penn State College of Medicine. The Carlino Fund underwrites and supports several IBD research initiatives at Penn State Hershey Medical Center, including the region's only familial registry that investigates the genetic causes of these debilitating illnesses.
