University launches single sign-on technology for Web users

Penn State WebAccess is a technology that creates an environment that allows users to login once for the day and have those sites participating in WebAccess use that login for the day — reducing the number of times users have to type in their Penn State user ID and password. The technology, which now is available at Penn State, is designed to be used only by University community members with active Penn State Access Accounts. It is based on software developed at the University of Michigan as part of the National Science Foundation's National Middleware Initiative. Information Technology Services already has made its internal staff Web site and the Penn State Portal WebAccess-capable in order to test how the system can be applied to Web services University-wide.
