Trustees approve 2005-06 appropriation request, again seek restoration of funding
For the second straight year, Penn State will be seeking to have its appropriation from the commonwealth of Pennsylvania restored to the level of funding received by the University in 2001-02. The University's Board of Trustees approved a request that would increase the state's 2005-06 appropriation to Penn State by $17.6 million over the current year's estimated level of state funding. This amount would be equivalent to what the University received three years ago.

Board approves 2005-06 capital budget request, hears update on Penn State's five-year capital plan
Penn State's Board of Trustees received an update on Penn State's $945 million capital construction plan for the next five years. The board also authorized the University to request $71.89 million from the Pennsylvania Legislature to fund capital budget projects beginning next fiscal year. Penn State's capital budget funds new construction and renovation projects at all 24 Penn State locations across the commonwealth.

Board receives snapshot of today's Penn State student
With the start of another new academic year upon them, Penn State's Board of Trustees was offered a snapshot of the characteristics, values, interests and behaviors of today's Penn State students at the Trustees' meeting on the University Park campus. Vicky Triponey, vice president for student affairs; Philip Burlingame, assistant vice president for student affairs; and Andrea Dowhower, director of student affairs research and assessment, explained how staying closely in touch with today's students helps to shape student affairs programs and services.

Penn State leverages tobacco settlement funds to maximize research
Funds from Pennsylvania's share of the settlement paid by tobacco companies to 46 states seeking to recover health-care costs connected to smoking are being leveraged at Penn State to obtain additional funding from federal and other sources in order to maximize the University's health research effort. Speaking to the Board of Trustees, Eva J. Pell, vice president for research and dean of The Graduate School, said, "In all cases, our primary goals are to use these resources to leverage our ability to be competitive for major grants and contracts, and, ultimately, to improve health and prevent disease for the people of Pennsylvania."

Trustees approve new name for Ag Arena
In honor of Obie Snider, a longtime supporter of agriculture at Penn State, the University's Board of Trustees approved a proposed naming of the Agricultural Arena at University Park. The facility was named the Snider Agricultural Arena after the former Board of Trustees member.

Trustees renew terms of non-university members of the Penn State Investment Council
Penn State's Board of Trustees has renewed the terms of the five non-University representatives to the Penn State Investment Council. The board established the council in September 2000 to provide direct oversight of the University's endowment and long-term investment program in response to Penn State's increasing asset base and complex marketing strategies.
