Penn State Hershey Medical Center again earns Consumer Choice Award

September 29, 2004

Hershey, Pa. -- For the fifth consecutive year, Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center has been named a Consumer Choice Award winner by National Research Corp. (NRC), an independent health-care performance measurement company based in Lincoln, Neb.

NRC publicly announced its 2004/2005 Consumer Choice Award winners in the Sept. 20 issue of Modern Healthcare magazine. In compiling its NRC Health-care Market Guide for 2004, the firm surveyed more than 140,000 consumers, inquiring which hospitals have the best overall quality and image.

Penn State Hershey Medical Center is one of 187 hospitals nationwide, out of more than 3,000 named by consumers, to earn NRC's 2004/2005 Consumer Choice Award distinction. Only 10 hospitals in Pennsylvania, including the medical center, received NRC honors this year. Penn State Hershey Medical Center now has earned the NRC Consumer Choice Award for five consecutive years (2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004/2005). The medical center also took honors in 1999 while part of the former Penn State Geisinger Health System.

"Our patients are our most important constituents," said Darrell G. Kirch, senior vice president for health affairs, dean of Penn State College of Medicine and chief executive officer of Penn State Hershey Medical Center. "We continue to honor our commitment to our patients to provide them with the most comprehensive, compassionate and cost-effective care possible."

Founded in 1981, National Research Corp. is based on a mission of providing the most actionable, up-to-date market information to health-care organizations. According to NRC, the corporation has conducted more performance studies for health-care organizations than any other firm in the country.

The NRC Healthcare Market Guide is a nationally syndicated study conducted annually to compile consumer assessments of their health plans, personal physicians, local hospitals and health systems as well as their current health status. It details performance specifics on more than 800 health plans and 3,000 hospitals and health systems by name. The study tracks the performance of these health-care organizations by metropolitan area, state, national or custom-defined service areas.
