Best selling author/journalist to speak at Penn State

University Park, Pa. -- Bestselling author and journalist Bebe Moore Campbell will speak on Wednesday, Nov. 17, at 7 p.m. in the HUB Auditorium on Penn State's University Park campus.

Sponsored by Penn State's Africana Research Center and the Institute for Arts and Humanities, Campbell's visit is the second event in the "In Pursuit of Social Justice: Recognizing Pennsylvania Black Artists" initiative. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Campbell is a native Philadelphian and a graduate of University of Pittsburgh, with a degree in elementary education. Her writing ranges from fiction to nonfiction, adult novels to children's books, and biography to social issues. Her novels include "Brothers and Sisters," "Singing in the Comeback Choir" (both New York Times bestsellers), and "Your Blues Ain't Like Mine" (winner of a NAACP Image Award) and "What You Owe Me" (Los Angeles Times Book of the Year 2001). Her nonfiction has appeared in New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Ms., Essence, Ebony, and Black Enterprise, as well as other publications.

She won acclaim for her memoir, "Sweet Summer, Growing Up With and Without My Dad." Her children's book "Sometimes My Mommy Gets Angry" won the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) Outstanding Literature Award for 2003. Campbell is a regular commentator for National Public Radio's Morning Edition program.
